Meet Our Team of Veterinary Care Specialists
Dr. Sombke, Veterinarian
Dr. Amber Sombke was born and raised in Groton, SD. Growing up on a farm with her own dogs and cats, her love for animals began at a very young age. During her junior high and high school years, she dedicated her time to volunteering at various veterinary clinics, which ignited a passion to pursue veterinary medicine.
Dr. Sombke received her Associates of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology degree from Ridgewater College in Willmar, MN in 2010. She continued her education and received her Bachelor of Science in Biology degree from Northern State University in 2012. She graduated with her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 2016. She started her career right here at Cooper Animal Clinic where she focuses on small animal medicine. She enjoys all aspects of small animal medicine but carries a special interest in soft tissue surgery, dentistry and internal medicine.
Dr. Sombke and her husband, Bryce, have one daughter and a house full of furry family members. Outside of veterinary medicine, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, hunting, fishing, and just being outdoors!
Erica, Practice Manager
Erica may be a familiar face to some. She is an Aberdeen Central graduate who originally began her career in veterinary medicine right here at Cooper Animal Clinic in 2007 as a veterinary assistant and groomer. In 2017 Erica left the practice to join the team at Wetonka Veterinary Service. There she was able to pursue her love of working with livestock and local cattle producers. This passion of hers stems from helping her dad on the family cattle ranch near Gann Valley, SD. Erica and her husband Chris moved to Columbia, SD in 2013. They have two beautiful, energetic daughters who enjoy the outdoors as much as they do. She enjoys spending her time with friends and family, camping, playing in the yard with her kids and her Australian Shepherd, Rider, or cuddling on the couch with her cats Buckie & KitKat. After recently returning to Cooper Animal Clinic as the Practice Manager, Erica is excited to continue assisting Dr. Sombke and the team provide the best care for your loved ones.
April, Veterinary Technician

Following her passion, April ventured across the state to Rapid City, SD, where she pursued her associate of applied science in Veterinary Technology degree, equipping her with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the veterinary field. Having joined Cooper Animal Clinic in 2007, April has been an integral part of our team for many years.
Caitlin, Veterinary Technician
Caitlin is an Aberdeen native, and her journey in the veterinary field began at South Dakota State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science with a specialization in pre-veterinary studies. Her academic pursuits also led her to minors in both chemistry and equine studies. Following her graduation, she spent nearly two years at a mixed-animal practice, gaining valuable experience. She then pursued an Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology degree at Ridgewater College in Willmar, MN. Over the past five years, Caitlin has been an invaluable asset to a predominantly equine facility in Sturgis, SD, where she worked under the guidance of a board-certified equine surgeon. Recently, Caitlin decided to return to her roots and moved back to the area to join Cooper Animal Clinic in July 2023. Outside of veterinary medicine, Caitlin enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and being outdoors. Caitlin and her husband, Gary, have two dogs Moe and Ryuk.
